Christmas Revisited

A STORY TOLD TO WARLI CHILDREN

by

Wendell D'Cruz S.J.

This story is more than just a simple retelling of the Christmas narrative in a Warli context. It is a journey inwards, however fumbling our steps may be, into the very depths of the Warli soul. Warli Art, within the confines of the marriage ritual, is a closed world, in which the non-Warli has no part. But extended beyond the bonds of the marriage ritual, into the world of culture, religion and environmental concerns, Warli Art becoms the symbol of identity of the Warli spirit within the arena of multi-faceted human relationships. In this our first, fumbling attempt, I have tried to remain faithful to the spirit of the children with whom I have lived and worked, and who have been the inspiration behind this story.
