God's gentle initiative

One day a professor confessed to his wife how, in spite of his being a specialist in many fields, his knowledge was yet so limited. "I tend to take a lot of things for granted. For instance, he confided, "I am ashamed to admit that I don't even know how the electric bulb works."

"That's unbelievable," exclaimed his wife. "It's so simple, dear," she said patronisingly, "you press a switch, that's all!"

Many of us often take prayer for granted. We believe it functions on the same principle as most of our modern gadgets, you press a switch and get it going. How often do we stop to reflect on the 'power' that makes it work?

You will discover God in prayer and realize that prayer is possible only with God's grace.

Suggested approach to Prayer

Close your eyes, still the body, silence the mind. You hear a knock on the door. On opening it you find God there. What is your immediate reaction? Welcome him in. Offer him a seat. Start a conversation. Speak to him about your expectations, desires, plans, fears... Listen to what he says; then respond.

If you run out of words, do not get impatient or anxious. He understands. Silently observe him lookung lovingly at you, and wait for him to speak again.

Listen! I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his/her house. Rev (3.20)

Ask the Lord to give you courage to let him have a permanent place in your heart! Pray that you may feel at home with God.
